US ambassador to Ukraine resigns

The ambassador has come under increasing pressure from senior officials in the Trump administration to question her willingness to support the White House's new strategy on Ukraine, the Financial Times reported.

Trump's policy differs significantly from that of the previous Biden administration, which provided Kiev with billions of dollars in military and financial aid and imposed sanctions against Russia.

"Ambassador Brink is resigning. She has been ambassador there for three years - that's a long time in a war zone," US State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said.

Western diplomats in Kiev have characterized Brink as an important defender of Ukraine both publicly and privately since the first weeks of a full-scale Russian invasion in 2022. One described her as a strong personality and a serious diplomat, adding that pressure from both the Trump and Zelensky administrations had negatively affected her.

Ukrainian officials considered the ambassador too critical of them, especially regarding the country's efforts to fight corruption.

Officials pointed to a noticeable change in her messaging recently, which they saw as becoming closer to Trump's positions and increasingly critical of Ukraine.

An analysis of Brink's posts on social network X revealed significant changes in her rhetoric since Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20. In the 75 days before the new president took office, she was critical of Russia and the war in Ukraine 53 times, while in the 75 days afterward she published only five posts mentioning Russia, none of which blamed it for the hostilities.
