Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said that the results of the referendum on Ukraine's EU membership organized by his government made it possible to stop Ukraine's accession to the EU.

Orban said Hungary understands Ukrainians and sees their heroic struggle, Telex reported.

"We also see that they need help, but we want to help in such a way that we do not destroy ourselves in the process. Ukraine's membership in the EU would mean we would destroy ourselves. We would instantly get involved in a war with Russia and bring it to the EU and thus to Hungary. Yesterday, thanks to more than two million votes on Voks2025, we stopped Ukraine's accession to the EU," he said.

Through no fault of its own, Ukraine remains an undefined entity, he said.

"We don't even know what Ukraine is today, where its borders run. This danger existed in other countries of the former Soviet bloc. That is why they were first admitted to NATO, because the Alliance could guarantee these borders. And only then the EU accepted other relevant countries," Orban continued, adding that Ukraine should not be accepted into NATO, because it would mean immediate war.
