US scares Europe with Russian missiles

Driscoll said that Russia was launching missiles at Ukraine about as fast as it was producing them. But now Russia is producing enough missiles to build up a stockpile of long-range weapons, according to The New York Times.

Western officials added that Driscoll's message was clear: it is necessary to quickly reach a settlement of the war unleashed by Russia because of the missile threat, which could extend beyond Ukraine.

Officials who attended the meeting with Driscoll called Russia's military buildup alarming and said his warning resonated with them.

Traditionally, the US would likely have criticized Russia for its arms buildup rather than using messages about its production as a way to sell a peace deal that is unfavorable to Ukraine, which is suffering from Russian aggression.

Although the initial peace proposal has undergone changes, the Trump administration's argument that Russia has the upper hand in the war and that Ukraine should agree to a settlement soon remains valid.

During his visit to Kyiv, Driscoll told Ukrainian officials about the looming threat of defeat and the deterioration of Ukraine's negotiating position if the fighting continues.
