Ukraine ready to create 30-kilometer demilitarized zone - Kellogg

According to Kellogg, the way out of the situation could be a ceasefire “on the ground”, meaning the sides retain control of the territories they now hold, Fox News reported.

"So the Ukrainians need to be told, 'This is one of those situations that can change over time.' If you agree to a ceasefire on current positions, the land that you control, that you fought for is your land for the moment,'" he said.

He cited examples from the Baltic states after World War II and German reunification, noting that political realities can change over time.

Kellogg said Ukraine is ready for a temporary demilitarized zone: Ukrainian troops can withdraw 15 kilometers, and so can Russian troops. This would create a 30-kilometer zone without hostilities, which would be controlled by the military of a “coalition of the determined.”

"And they are ready, for a certain period, to create a demilitarized zone. In fact, they said: we are withdrawing 15 kilometers, and you Russians are also withdrawing 15 kilometers. In other words, a 30-kilometer zone is being created, which is clearly controlled. It will be possible to observe whether there are violations. And if we manage to hold this truce for 30 days - I really believe that - then it can be extended. And as a military man, I will say: it is very difficult to start a conflict again after the cessation of hostilities. And I don't think they will fight again," Kellogg said.
