This month, Ukraine has significantly intensified its attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, striking the largest number of facilities and hitting the widest range of targets since the start of the full-scale war.

In December, there were at least 24 attacks on Russian oil refineries, oil tankers, and other maritime facilities, as well as key pipeline infrastructure, according to Bloomberg.

These strikes are putting more pressure on Russian exports, which are already suffering from international sanctions against Russia's largest oil producers.

Although Moscow continues to ship significant volumes of crude oil, the flow of petrodollars — a key source of funding for the war — is drying up. The Russian government expects oil and gas revenues to fall to 23% of budget revenues this year, a record low.

It is particularly noteworthy that Kyiv has intensified its strikes on offshore infrastructure, in particular by launching repeated attacks on Lukoil's oil and gas fields in the Caspian Sea.

In December, the Black Sea ports of Taman and Rostov were hit, where several tankers caught fire, and strikes on Russia's “shadow fleet” continued.

Deep inside Russian territory, Ukraine continued to attack Russian oil refineries: according to the General Staff, Storm Shadow air-launched cruise missiles were used for the first time against an oil refinery in Novoshakhtinsk.

Russia regularly strikes Ukrainian energy and civilian infrastructure, leaving thousands of people without electricity, water, and heating in freezing conditions.
