Former US President Joe Biden has called Donald Trump's approach to Russia's war on Ukraine a modern-day policy of appeasement and fears it could signal to other European countries that it is time to give in to Russian Federation.

Trump took a different approach to the war from Biden, telling Ukraine that it should consider giving up some territory to Russia if it wants the war to end, the BBC reported.

“This is the modern policy of appeasement,” Biden said.

In his view, Putin considers Ukraine to be part of Russia. He believes he has historical rights to Ukraine. He can't accept that the Soviet Union has collapsed. And anyone who thinks he will stop is just a fool.

"We provided everything necessary to ensure their independence. And we were prepared to respond more aggressively if Putin did make a new move," he says.

Biden sought to avoid the prospect of World War III with nuclear powers.

"And we avoided that. What will Putin do if the situation becomes really difficult for him? Will threaten to use tactical nuclear weapons. This is not a game and not roulette," he noted.
