Trump to offer Putin a resource deal

Among the proposals that Trump may present to Putin in Anchorage are granting Russia access to Alaska's natural resources, lifting some sanctions on the Russian aviation industry, and providing Putin with access to rare earth minerals in Ukrainian territories currently occupied by Russia, according to The Telegraph.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Besent has been brought in to help prepare for the talks. He is studying the economic concessions that the US could make to Russia in order to speed up the conclusion of a ceasefire agreement.

Ukraine has 10% of the world's lithium reserves, which is used in the production of batteries. Two of the largest lithium deposits are located in areas controlled by Russia, and Putin has already claimed rights to the valuable minerals mined there.

“There are a number of incentives, including a possible agreement on minerals/rare earth metals,” said a source familiar with the proposals.

Other incentives include lifting the ban on exports of spare parts and equipment needed to maintain Russian aircraft, a significant portion of which are in disrepair.

After the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the West restricted supplies of critical parts, leading to the deterioration of a significant portion of the aircraft fleet. According to Sergei Chemezov, head of the Russian state defense conglomerate Rostec, up to 30% of Western-made aircraft in Russia could be taken out of service within five years.

The lifting of sanctions against Russian aviation could be beneficial for American manufacturer Boeing. With a fleet of more than 700 aircraft, dominated by Airbus and Boeing, Russian airlines could once again turn to American suppliers for critical parts and maintenance.

Trump is considering granting Russia access to natural resources in the Bering Strait, where significant unexplored oil and gas reserves are estimated to exist.

Sources in the British government have said that such incentives could be acceptable to Europe if they do not appear to be a reward for Russia.

Israel's occupation of the West Bank of the Jordan River could be used as a model for ending the war. Russia would have military and economic control over the occupied territories of Ukraine under its own administration, similar to Israel's de facto control over Palestinian lands.

This idea was discussed during meetings between Trump's special envoy Steve Wigoff and his Russian counterparts.
