At least 100 people were killed and many more were injured when the Nigerian Air Force struck a market in the northeast of the country during an operation against jihadists.

The incident occurred in Yobe State, which is the center of the jihadist insurgency in the region, according to The Guardian.

The Yobe state government confirmed in a statement that the Nigerian military strike targeted a stronghold of the terrorist group Boko Haram in the area and that some people visiting the Sunday market in Jilli were injured.

The Nigerian army regularly carries out airstrikes against armed groups hiding in forested areas.

Security analysts note that such incidents occur due to poor-quality intelligence, as well as insufficient coordination between ground forces and the air force.

Since 2017, at least 500 civilians have been killed as a result of such mistaken strikes.
