US President Donald Trump says White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller is one of the top contenders for the post of national security adviser following the resignation of Mike Waltz.

Trump ousted Waltz last week and temporarily appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio as acting secretary, Reuters reported.

“I'm appointing somebody soon,” he said.

Trump expects to appoint a permanent adviser in about six months - and that candidate could be Miller.

"I think he already fulfills that role to a certain extent. Because he has a strong say on a lot of issues. Stephen is a very valuable person in our administration," Trump added.
