We are closer to peace in Ukraine than we were two weeks ago - Rubio

He noted that US President Donald Trump wants the war that Russia has unleashed against Ukraine to end as soon as possible, the State Department reported.

"I mean, I think there's a lot to work on, but we're closer than we were two weeks ago or six months ago," Rubio said.

Last week in Saudi Arabia, he said, we had good support from Ukraine for Trump's proposed plan.

"They agreed to stop shooting and freeze everything that's going on, and we can start talking about how to end this for good. And now we have to get something similar from the Russians," Rubio noted.

He recalled Trump's special envoy Steve Whitkoff's visit to Moscow, where he met with the Russian dictator.

"He came back with some information, but we'll know more tomorrow after the president talks to Putin. And hopefully we'll be in a better position," he added.
