UK ready to commit troops to Ukraine

“The UK is ready to play a leading role in accelerating work on security guarantees for Ukraine. This includes continued support for the Ukrainian military, where the UK is already committing £3 billion a year until at least 2030. It also means being ready and willing to contribute to Ukraine's security guarantees by putting our own troops on the ground if necessary,” Starmer said.

He is convinced that the end of the war cannot be a temporary pause before a new attack by the Russian dictator.

“But any role in helping to guarantee the security of Ukraine is helping to guarantee the security of our continent and the security of this country. The end of this war, when it comes, cannot just be a temporary pause before Putin attacks again,” he said.

He said Britain could play a unique role as a bridge between Europe and the US in the peace process in Ukraine.

“These decisive days ahead will determine the future security of our continent. As I will say in Paris, peace comes by force. But the opposite is also true. Weakness leads to war. This is a moment for us all to step up - and the United Kingdom will do so because it is right for the values and freedoms we cherish and because it is fundamental to our own national security,” he said.
