President Donald Trump's team agrees with him that US control over Greenland is important for national security, but at the same time, his key advisers have not reached a consensus on how best to achieve this.
One of Trump's advisers said that there is no desire to make Greenland another US state, CNN reports.
“But do we want an alliance with them? Without a doubt,” he said.

As Trump steps up his aggressive rhetoric about wanting to take over the Arctic island and refuses to rule out military means to achieve this goal, several officials are cautious about such a radical move.
Instead, many of Trump's allies would prefer the president to use the threat of tariffs as a bargaining chip, creating an opportunity to extract additional concessions from the Europeans.
“They believe they can try to pressure Denmark into a deal, even if it does not result in the cession of the entire territory. Some form of joint administration of Greenland would achieve the same goal,” one source said.
On Sunday, a number of European leaders tried to convey to Trump that the deployment of troops in Greenland was not directed against him.
During a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump acknowledged that he may have received incorrect information about the deployment of European troops in Greenland.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte seems convinced that an agreement is possible to give the president a way out of the situation.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte seems convinced that an agreement is possible to give the president a way out of the situation.
Rutte is privately raising the possibility of revising the 1951 agreement between the US, Denmark, and Greenland, possibly with some strong guarantees that Chinese investment in Greenland will be prohibited.
Officials say Trump's latest aggressive actions toward Greenland began after a successful US military mission earlier this month to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, which cemented the US president's vision of American hegemony over the entire Western Hemisphere.
Some European officials also expressed concern that their decision to send troops from Denmark and other NATO countries for joint military exercises over the weekend could have backfired, angering Trump and convincing him to act more quickly than he would have under other circumstances.
