Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs could disrupt the global economic order.

He emphasized that Japan will seek common ground with the United States on how they can cooperate on trade and national security issues, Reuters reported.

"During negotiations with the United States, we need to understand what is behind Trump's arguments, both in terms of logic and the emotional elements of his views. I am fully aware that what has happened so far could disrupt the global economic order", he said.

He said the government is not thinking of releasing a supplementary budget now, but is ready to act in time to cushion the economic blow from the US tariffs.

The remarks came ahead of Thursday's bilateral trade talks, which are expected to cover topics ranging from tariffs and non-tariff barriers to exchange rates.

In the latest exchange on tariffs, Trump said on Sunday that he would announce a tariff rate on imported semiconductors next week.

Japan's Economy Minister Racei Akazawa said any discussion on exchange rates would be between Japanese Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

“Both countries share the view that excessive market volatility will have adverse effects on the economy,” Kato said.
