Trump plans to talk to Xi Jinping

Trump said talks with China would likely take place within the next 24 hours. He announced over the weekend that the duties on China would take effect Tuesday, Bloomberg reported.

"If we can't get an agreement with China, the duties will be very, very significant," he said.

White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said Trump plans to talk to Chinese leader Xi Jinping about illegal Chinese fentanyl, which kills tens of thousands of Americans each year.

"The president has made it very clear to China that we're not going to tolerate this. And I would also add that many of President Trump's tariffs from his first term are still in place," she said.

For Beijing, an agreement to share ownership in the Chinese-owned TikTok app is expected to be on the agenda of talks between the countries' leaders.
