US House Speaker Mike Johnson said that Congress will not impose new sanctions against Russia without the approval of President Donald Trump.

There is considerable interest in Congress in introducing new restrictive measures against Russia. He is ready to cooperate with the White House and the Senate to ensure that the sanctions are adopted, CBS News reports.

"I really believe that desperate times call for desperate measures. I think sanctions against Russia are long overdue, and there is considerable interest in this in Congress. Therefore, we are ready to work with the White House and our colleagues from the Senate in the House of Representatives to make this happen. I personally really want to do this."

He stressed that Congress cannot make such decisions on its own, because the final word belongs to the president.

"The president will have to sign everything we do and approve it as law. It has to be a partnership, but we are subordinate to the commander-in-chief," he stressed.
