At least six people have been killed and dozens injured, according to unconfirmed reports, during mass protests in Iran.

The largest protests in the Islamic Republic in the last three years, caused by deteriorating economic conditions, have led to violence in several provinces, Reuters reports.

Three protesters were killed and 17 injured during an attack on a police station in the western Iranian province of Lorestan.

The rioters entered the police headquarters at around 6 p.m. (local time) on Thursday, clashed with police, and set fire to several police cars.

The clashes between protesters and security forces mark a significant escalation of unrest that has spread across the country since shop owners began protesting on Sunday against government actions over the sharp fall in the currency and rapid rise in prices.
