US Defense Secretary Pete Hagseth said in a closed briefing for lawmakers that Iranian Shahed strike drones pose a serious threat and that air defense systems will not be able to intercept them all.

The Pentagon chief and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Keane acknowledged that drones pose a more complex problem than expected, CNN reports.

The drones fly low and slow, making them difficult to detect and less vulnerable than ballistic missiles.

Some officials tried to allay fears by noting that partners in the Persian Gulf countries had stockpiled interceptors in advance.

During the briefing, representatives of Congress reiterated the goals previously outlined by US President Donald Trump: destroying Iran's missile capabilities and naval forces, ending its nuclear ambitions, and stopping the arming of militants.

Regime change is seen as a secondary objective.
