The leader of the far-right Romanian party Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), George Simion, and the liberal mayor of Bucharest, Nicusor Dan, are going into the second round of Romania's presidential election.

After 99.89% of ballots were counted, Simion was found to be in first place with 40.87% of the vote. Dan scored 20.97%, ahead of ruling coalition candidate Crin Antonescu, who received 20.13% of the vote, Digi24.ro reported.

Simion's victory could isolate the country, undermine private investment and destabilize NATO's eastern flank, where Ukraine is now in its third year of confronting a Russian invasion.
