EU is working on a new package of sanctions against Russia

The EU is working on every step that will ultimately put an end to the bloodshed. The first step towards peace must be a sustainable ceasefire.

“Russia must be under constant pressure to come to the negotiating table — not for show, but to achieve results. To this end, Europe will continue to raise the price of war for Russia. We are preparing a new package of sanctions. And we have frozen Russian assets in the EU for a long time,” she said.

According to her, the second step towards peace should be reliable and convincing security guarantees for Ukraine.

"These security guarantees must be based on firm principles. We will respect the decisions that Ukraine makes for itself. The decision on territories must be made by Ukraine – and Ukraine alone. Similarly, issues concerning the EU and NATO will be discussed between EU and NATO members. In short: nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine. Nothing about the EU without the EU. Nothing about NATO without NATO," she said.

The third point concerns Ukraine's economic recovery. Von der Leyen assured that Europe remains a reliable partner.

"Ukraine's needs are enormous and urgent. We are committed to Ukraine's recovery and future prosperity. Europe will remain its strongest and most reliable partner. We have offered to cover two-thirds of Ukraine's financial needs for the next two years, around €90 billion. Therefore, this week's discussions in the European Council will be decisive," she added.
