During their visit to Alaska, Putin and his delegation were forced to pay cash for refueling their plane because sanctions prevent them from accessing the US banking system.

The Donald Trump administration has not imposed new sanctions against Russia, but all previous restrictions remain in force, according to NBC News.

“They face the consequences of sanctions every day, but it has not changed the course of the war. That does not mean that the sanctions were inappropriate — they just did not change the outcome,” said US Secretary of State Mark Rubio.

He also noted that new restrictions are unlikely to force Russia to immediately stop its aggression, as their effect will only be felt in months or years. In addition, a new package of sanctions could disrupt the peace talks that the US is trying to conduct through Trump's mediation.

Putin spent about five hours in Alaska, where he held talks with Donald Trump and gave a joint press conference.
