Negotiations to end the war are in full swing - US

“Negotiations around resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict are in full swing. Sometimes you have to apply pressure, sometimes you have to be more friendly, sometimes you have to promise rewards and sometimes you have to promise punishment, because it's a dirty chore, but it's the job that the American people elected the Trump administration to do,” J.D. Vance said.

He said that sometimes there are situations where there is frustration with both Russians and Ukrainians. Periodically there are cases when you want to give up trying to negotiate, but, according to him, the US President Donald Trump does not let you do it, reports “RBC-Ukraine”.

“You know, that's the nature of negotiations: you go back and forth. And sometimes you already want to spread your hands, but President Trump does not allow us to do that. He's constantly forcing us to come back to the negotiating table, to constantly find a solution to the problem, to bring the sides closer together. And that's exactly the point at which the negotiations are at right now,” the US Vice President said.

He added that Russia and Ukraine have different visions of a peaceful settlement. But the breakthrough is that the U.S. got both sides to talk about ending the war. He noted that he does not know 100% what Washington will be able to do. But there is more optimism now than before.

“What one side needs is different from what the other side needs. And the job of diplomacy is to try to bring those two sides together. Charlie, I don't know 100 percent what we can do. However, I think we're trying very hard. Today I feel more optimistic than two weeks ago, and two weeks ago we were more optimistic than two months ago,” said Vance.
