Trump is tired of peace negotiations

The talk of sanctions comes as Trump is frustrated with Putin's attacks on Ukraine and the slow pace of peace talks, The Wall Street Journal reported.

One source said the restrictions probably won't include new banking sanctions, but other options are being discussed to pressure the Russian leader to make concessions at the negotiating table, particularly regarding the 30-day cease-fire that Ukraine supports and Russia rejects.

Trump could also decide not to impose new sanctions.

Trump is tired of peace talks and is considering backing out if the latest push doesn't work.

It is unclear what would happen if the U.S. backs out of the peace process and whether Trump would continue military support for Ukraine.

For weeks, Trump has resisted pressure to rebuke Putin for refusing to agree to a cease-fire that Ukraine has supported.

Trump's thinking has been influenced by three key views.

First was his dislike of President Vladimir Zelensky, who Trump believed was encouraging further conflict by pushing for sanctions even though Zelensky had agreed to the ceasefire.

Second, Trump believed that additional sanctions against Russia would not limit its ability to wage war, but would complicate efforts to renew U.S.-Russian economic ties.

Third, Trump believed that he knew Putin and that the Russian leader would end the war as a personal favor. However, Putin's unwillingness to concede has tainted Trump's opinion of his Russian vis-a-vis, especially after a phone call last week during which Putin refused to sign a ceasefire agreement.
