Trump decided to “punish” 69 countries

According to the decree, the new import duties will come into force in seven days, with the exception of Canada - the restrictions will apply to it immediately, the Financial Times reports.

The purpose of the imposed duties is to reduce the trade deficit, which the White House called an unusual and extraordinary threat to US national security and the economy.

The highest duties were received by Syria (41%), Laos and Burma (40% each). The lowest - 10% - were granted to the UK and its Falkland Islands separately.

Trump imposed a 20% tariff on Taiwan - the world's most important exporter of semiconductors.

Some US partners, including the UK, EU and Japan, have managed to reach agreements in time – although critics in those countries have questioned the results of the agreements reached.

The new tariffs have hit Canada particularly hard. Despite Prime Minister Mark Carney’s latest efforts to reach an agreement with Trump, no deal has been reached. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Carney ignored political realities, including recognizing a Palestinian state in the middle of negotiations, angering Trump.

A separate presidential order for Canada will impose a 35% tariff as early as Friday, August 1. For other countries, the tariffs will go into effect in a week, to give customs authorities time to implement them.

Goods that meet the terms of the North American Trade Agreement (USMCA) – namely those made entirely from North American raw materials or using deep processing of imported resources – remain exempt from the increased tariffs.

Taiwan President Lai Qingde called the 20% tariff that the United States imposed on imports from his country temporary and expressed hope that it could be reduced as a result of further negotiations.
