The US has approved the sale of $11.1 billion worth of weapons to Taiwan, the largest package ever provided by the US to the country.

The announcement of the arms sale to Taiwan is the second during the current administration of US President Donald Trump. It comes amid increased military and diplomatic pressure from China, Reuters reports.

The proposed arms sale agreement covers eight items, including HIMARS rocket systems, howitzers, Javelin anti-tank missiles, Altius loitering munitions drones, and spare parts for other equipment.

The package is currently under review by the US Congress.

The Pentagon said the arms sale is in line with US national, economic, and security interests, as it supports Taiwan's ongoing efforts to modernize its armed forces and maintain a credible defense capability.

Under pressure from the US, Taiwan is working to transform its armed forces so that they can wage asymmetric warfare using mobile, smaller, and often cheaper weapons.

“Our country will continue to promote defense reforms, strengthen the defense capabilities of the whole society, demonstrate our determination to defend ourselves, and ensure peace through strength,” said Karen Kuo, spokeswoman for the Taiwanese presidential office.
