Trump threatens Canada with 50% tariffs

"Given Canada's wrongful, illegal, and persistent refusal to certify the Gulfstream 500, 600, 700, and 800 jets—some of the finest, most technologically advanced airplanes ever built—we are decertifying the Bombardier Global Express, as well as all Canadian-made aircraft, until Gulfstream—an outstanding American company—is fully certified, as it should have been years ago. If for any reason this situation is not immediately corrected, I intend to levy a 50% tariff on all aircraft sold in the US from Canada," Trump said.

According to Bloomberg, this decision could have critical consequences for American carriers. Specifically, American Airlines operates approximately 200 Bombardier CRJ regional jets, while its partner Delta Air Lines operates over 150 such aircraft.

The threat to revoke certification could lead to the grounding of approximately 3,000 aircraft owned by large corporations and individuals in the United States. Bombardier has over 2,800 suppliers in 47 US states, and 64% of its sales in 2024 were in the US market.
