Her character was supposed to be not only beautiful, but also have a delicate soul, sympathy for the problems of others and the fragility of her own nervous system. With all the abundance of actresses in French cinema who could have played this role, the director chose Jacqueline Bisset, an Englishwoman living in Britain.
