On this day in 1990, the famous "revolution on granite" began in Kyiv

The hunger strike by students from various Ukrainian cities in the tent city they set up on the Maidan shook the very foundations of the then government and laid the political foundation for Ukraine's independence.

Old-timers remember the times when Kyiv residents flocked to the Maidan to watch these students and support them – some silently, some actively.

Almost all of the students' demands were met, from the resignation of Council of Ministers head Vitaliy Masol to compulsory military service for Ukrainians within Ukraine, which was then still part of the USSR.

After the Supreme Council of the Ukrainian SSR adopted a resolution on October 17, 1990, satisfying the demands of the hunger strikers, the "revolution on granite" ended.
