The U.S. has intercepted communications between Iranian officials saying the U.S. attack on Iran's nuclear facilities was less destructive than they expected.

In intercepted communications that were supposed to be confidential, Iranian officials speculated about why the strikes ordered by President Donald Trump were not as destructive and widespread as they had expected, The Washington Post reported.

The White House did not deny that such an interception of a conversation between Iranians did take place, but rejected the conclusions of a non-destructive strike and criticized the paper's reporters.

"It's shameful that the Washington Post is helping people commit crimes by publishing leaks of information taken out of context. The notion that unnamed Iranian officials know what happened under hundreds of feet of rubble is nonsense. Their nuclear weapons program is over,‘’ White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence said one piece of signaling intelligence does not reflect the full intelligence picture.

“A single phone call between unnamed Iranians is not the same as an intelligence assessment that considers the totality of evidence from multiple sources and methods,” the interlocutor said.
