Orbán demands EU start negotiations with Putin

According to Merz, Orbán began accusing European leaders of unwillingness to negotiate with Russia, DW reports.

“He accused us of not wanting to negotiate,” Merz explained.

Merz responded to Orban's accusation by saying that last July, when Hungary held the EU Council presidency, he traveled to Kyiv and then to Moscow to meet with Putin.

“And Putin's response was to bomb a children's hospital in Kyiv. That is not the path I want to take,” the chancellor added.

When asked if he had considered calling Putin, Merz replied: “Of course, I think about it. I just see that any attempt to talk to him now ends in even harsher attacks on Ukraine.”
