German deputy helped Belarus circumvent sanctions

The Leipzig Public Prosecutor's Office suspects Jörg Dornau, a member of the Saxony parliament from the Alternative for Germany party, of deliberately violating sanctions by organizing the illegal export of equipment to Belarus.

In August 2022, Dornau used a scheme to circumvent the European embargo by indicating Kazakhstan as the destination country for a telescopic loader. In fact, the equipment was exported to Belarus, which is a direct violation of the Trade and Payments Act, according to BILD.

The police detained the politician directly in the Saxony state parliament building immediately after the parliament stripped him of his parliamentary immunity. Law enforcement officers conducted searches of his offices, residential buildings, and cars in the city of Röta.

The deputy himself refuses to comment on the charges, and his party colleagues call the investigation politically motivated.
