Within a month (the single, dedicated to the memory of Princess Diana, was released on September 20), 31.8 million copies were sold.

On September 20, 1997, Elton John's old song "Candle in the Wind," a tribute to Marilyn Monroe and rewritten lyrics dedicated to Princess Diana, who died on August 31 of that year, topped the UK singles chart. A month later, it was announced that "Candle in the Wind" had become the most popular single in pop music history, with 31.8 million copies sold.

These figures are unsurprising, considering that 3 million people attended Diana Spencer's funeral, and 2.5 billion television viewers watched the broadcast.

However, the title of "most popular single in history" is questionable, as Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" has sold 50 million copies, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. However, this is only a rough estimate, as modern measurement methods were not yet in use when Crosby's single was released.

But even if Candle in the Wind was "only the second," it remains a shining example of the "Dianomania" that swept the world at the time.
