Denmark may transfer part of Greenland to the US

A NATO representative told CNN that one of the proposals discussed at Wednesday's meetings between Alliance representatives, including Secretary General Mark Rutte, was the possibility of Denmark allowing the US to build additional military bases in Greenland, which would be erected on territory considered sovereign US territory.

It is unclear whether this proposal will ultimately be part of the agreement hinted at by US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, when he backed down from his threats regarding tariffs after meeting with Rutte, but overall, increasing the US military presence in Greenland was the main topic of discussion.

The idea was put forward by Rutte. Two of the officials who attended the meeting compared it to the UK's bases in Cyprus, which are considered British territory.

The officials did not know whether the idea was part of the plan announced by Trump. When asked to comment on the agreement and its content, NATO said that negotiations between Denmark, Greenland, and the US would continue with the aim of ensuring that Russia and China never gain economic or military footholds in Greenland.
