Canada has chosen a new prime minister

Carney, 59, won 86 percent of the popular vote, beating former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland in an election that drew nearly 152,000 party members, Reuters reported.

Carney, who previously headed the central banks of Canada and England, will be Canada's first prime minister without political experience.

His rise to power comes amid a trade war with the U.S. that has been ignited by President Donald Trump. Carney emphasized that Canada cannot allow Trump to weaken its economy.

During the campaign, Carney said he supported retaliatory tariffs against the United States and a coordinated strategy to spur investment.

“There is somebody who is trying to weaken our economy. He's attacking Canadian workers, families and businesses. We cannot allow him to succeed,” Carney stated.

He emphasized that his government will act quickly and outside the box.

“It's not going to be business as usual. We will have to do things that we could not have imagined before, at a speed that we thought was impossible,” Carney emphasized.

Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January after more than nine years at the head of government, remained optimistic about the country's future.

“Make no mistake, this is a defining moment for the nation. Democracy is not a given. Freedom is not a given. Even Canada is not a given,” Trudeau noted.
