The commander of the British Royal Navy, First Sea Lord Gwyn Jenkins, has said that his country is close to losing the Atlantic to Russia for the first time since the end of World War II.

Jenkins noted that Russia has invested billions in its naval forces, particularly in the Northern Fleet, despite the millions of lives lost and the cost of its blatantly illegal invasion of Ukraine, according to The Times.

“The advantage we have enjoyed in the Atlantic since the end of the Cold War, since the end of World War II, is under threat. We are holding on, but not for long. Our potential adversaries are investing billions. We must step up our efforts, otherwise we will lose that advantage. We cannot allow that to happen,” he said.

He said that over the past two years, the number of Russian incursions into British waters has increased by 30%, including the visible presence of spy ships such as the Yantar, which is suspected of mapping underwater cables.

Speaking about the threat posed by Russia, Jenkins noted that the Yantar is only the part we see publicly, but it is not the part that worries me the most.

“What worries me most is what is happening beneath the waves,” he said.

According to Jenkins, the UK is combating warfare in the underwater combat space with the help of new technologies.
