Trump and Xi Jinping begin negotiations

The ceremony began with the playing of the U.S. national anthem and a 21-gun salute, according to Reuters.

Trump saluted, while Xi stood beside him. The Chinese national anthem was then played.

The two leaders exchanged a few words, and Trump patted Xi on the shoulder as they walked toward the children.

After the welcoming ceremony, Trump and Xi ascended the stairs to the Great Hall of the People to hold the first in a series of meetings.

At the start of the meeting, Xi delivered opening remarks, noting that the common interests of China and the U.S. outweigh their differences. He stated that the success of China and the U.S. is an opportunity for both sides

“Let 2026 be a historic and landmark year for China-U.S. relations, to build on the past and open up the future,” he said.

Expressing his gratitude for the welcoming ceremony, Trump noted that he and Xi have long enjoyed an excellent relationship, thanks to which they have been able to resolve difficulties as they arise, and added that a bright future awaits them.

“Every time we’ve had a problem, we’ve resolved it very quickly,” he said, adding that he respects China and the work Xi has done.

"You are a great leader; I tell everyone this - you are a great leader. Sometimes people don’t like it when I say that, but I say it anyway because it’s true,” Trump said.
