Rubio expels iranian delegation from the US

Although the Iranian delegation was likely due to leave the US soon anyway, Rubio's move marked a highly unusual diplomatic step and demonstrated the deep mistrust between the two nations amidst fruitless attempts to negotiate an end to the war, Axios reports.

Qatari mediators had attempted to broker a diplomatic breakthrough between the US and Iran but failed to achieve significant progress; neither side was willing to yield its position.

Among those ordered to leave New York was Rubio's Iranian counterpart, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

"Secretary Rubio expelled the Iranian delegation, which had stayed too long. The UN General Assembly had concluded, so it was time for them to leave," one official stated.

Ultimately, the Iranian delegation, including Araghchi, headed to the airport a few hours later and boarded a flight from New York to Doha at 1:20 a.m. on Tuesday.

A second source confirmed that the US had demanded the Iranian delegation leave the country but added that Araghchi was scheduled to return to Tehran on Monday evening regardless.
