Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has urged the EU to scrap a proposal to ban Russian energy products because of an expected rise in energy prices following the US bombing of Iran.

The European Commission has proposed a legally binding ban on EU imports of Russian gas and liquefied natural gas until the end of 2027. The proposal includes ensuring that the plan cannot be blocked by Hungary and Slovakia.

"At the end of the day, we will have to deal with further energy price increases. This is a serious threat, which is why Brussels should now lift the rules and bans on Russian energy imports," Orban said, following a Defense Council meeting he convened in response to U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear program sites.

Orban added that we are already suffering enough damage from the negative impact of the Iran-Israel war on energy.
