Prior to this, a "yellow" level air raid alert had been issued for southern regions including the capital, Vilnius and local residents reported on social media that they could hear fighter jets flying overhead. An alert was subsequently declared in Kaunas as well, LRT reports.

Debris fell near the village of Pratkunai, close to the town of Kaišiadorys in central Lithuania, not far from Kaunas. Military and police units arrived at the scene.

"Let us not rush to conclusions; an investigation is underway, and all circumstances will be clarified. The most important thing right now is that the threat has been neutralized and there is no longer any danger to the public. We thank our allies for their rapid response and precise shot," the Lithuanian Armed Forces said in a statement.

Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of the National Crisis Management Center, stated that while the specific type of UAV has not yet been identified, there is a significant probability that the drone carried a warhead.

The aircraft flew over Lithuanian territory for approximately half an hour and likely entered from Belarus.

This marks the first time an intruding drone has been shot down over Lithuanian territory.
