Jarvis appointed as UK's new Defence Secretary

In a dangerous and unstable world, we will give our armed forces the capabilities they need to defend Britain and keep our nation safe," Starmer said.

Jarvis has served as the Member of Parliament for Barnsley North since 2011 and served as Mayor of South Yorkshire from 2018 to 2022. Following Labour's victory in the 2024 general election, he was appointed Minister for Security at the Home Office, according to Sky News.

From 1997 to 2011, Jarvis served as an officer in the Parachute Regiment. During this time, he served in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

On June 11, Defence Secretary John Healey unexpectedly resigned amid controversy over the defence budget.
