Germany is hit by a wave of sabotage

The report by the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) was prepared following the first months of operation of the Joint Hybrid Defense Center (GAZ-Hybrid), opened in Berlin in mid-June. The list of recorded threats also includes instances of espionage activity without the use of drones, according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

The German Attorney General and state prosecutors have already opened 24 criminal cases related to espionage this year. Half of these involve cyberattacks. Investigations into another 40 suspected cyberespionage cases are ongoing.

In total, police have registered 112 espionage-related offenses. More than 60 cases involved unauthorized photography and video recording of military installations or equipment, and in 26 incidents, law enforcement suspects undercover activities aimed at sabotage. The largest number of such cases were identified in Brandenburg (23 crimes), North Rhine-Westphalia (21), Schleswig-Holstein (21), and Lower Saxony (15).

Security agencies recorded 747 suspicious drone detections. This includes 1,068 drone flights over critical infrastructure, military bases, and defense industry plants.

Drone operators are rarely apprehended. However, in July, a Moldovan citizen was arrested in Bavaria for using a drone to spy on a KNDS defense company. Investigators believe he was acting on instructions from Russian intelligence services.

The document describes an incident that occurred on August 9 near a gas processing plant in Großenkneten, Lower Saxony. A security guard at the plant was attempting to locate the operators of drones he had spotted and encountered two unidentified men in balaclavas near a fence. The assailants hit his head on the hood of a car and fled; they were never found.
