A group of Ukraine's key European allies – Germany, France, and the UK – are working with Kyiv to engage Russia in talks to end the war, as they see a shift in dynamics that strengthens President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's hand.
Representatives from Germany, France, and the UK are discussing the possibility of holding talks involving both sides. They have also discussed the matter with their Ukrainian counterparts, Bloomberg reports.
Amid the stalling of US-led negotiations and mounting Russian troop losses amid a stalemate on the battlefield, these three countries see an opportunity to potentially bring Putin to the negotiating table.

Pressure on the Kremlin is also increasing as Ukrainian forces achieve increasing success in conducting drone strikes deep into Russian territory, and there are signs of resistance to Putin's war at the highest levels in Moscow.
By holding talks now, the allies are seeking to avoid another winter, during which Russia is likely to intensify attacks on civilians and energy infrastructure, as Putin seeks to undermine Ukrainian morale.
The final decision on whether to continue negotiations with Russia rests with Zelenskyy, and European countries will not pressure the Ukrainian president to adopt a strategy he disagrees with.
In the coming days, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is scheduled to hold talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Zelenskyy warned that Ukraine urgently needs additional Patriot systems and other air defense capabilities as Russia continues to bomb the country's cities. Last month, he stated that Europe should try to play its role in the negotiating efforts, which have so far been largely US-led. Zelenskyy has repeatedly called on allies to increase pressure on Moscow.
Critics of the idea of establishing dialogue with Russia now, particularly some representatives of the so-called E3 countries, argue that now is not the time for negotiations with Moscow, as Putin shows no serious signs of being serious about negotiations and continues to make maximalist demands, particularly regarding the handover of Ukraine's unoccupied territories.
Instead, Kyiv's allies should seize this moment to provide Zelenskyy with the necessary ammunition and further increase pressure on the Kremlin by further tightening sanctions.
The E3 should work with the US to force Russia to the negotiating table, as the problem lies with Moscow, not Kyiv. European countries should not be the ones begging Putin for negotiations, but rather the opposite, given Russia's growing economic difficulties and staggering monthly losses.
