French Comedy Beats Hollywood at Box Office (video)

France remains a unique European country where domestically produced films beat Hollywood in cinemas.

So, francetvinfo. fr. reports, the comedy film "God Save Touchet" is currently leading the French box office, having collected more than a million viewers in the first week. (In France, unlike other countries, they do not count box office receipts, but the number of tickets).

The secret of such success, it seems, is simple - to shoot for mass distribution what you do best, and for the French, this has been comedies since the middle of the last century. So "God Save Touchet" is already the fifth film in the franchise, which began in 2011, and tells the story of the modest and slightly eccentric French family Touchet, consisting of father Jeff Touchet, mother Katie, their three children Stephanie, Wilfried and Donald, as well as grandmother Mamie Suze, Jeff's mother.

The action of the films mainly begins in the fictional commune of Bouzolles, located in the north of France. In the first film, the Touchet family moves to the "rich man's paradise" of Monaco after winning 100 million euros in the lottery. In the second film, the family visits Donald, who has gone to study in the United States, and in the third film, they move to the Elysee Palace after Jeff Touchet's unexpected victory in the presidential elections. The fourth film is a traditional Christmas comedy. And finally, the fifth film, the trailer for which we will put here, tells of the Touchet's trip to Great Britain, where the family meets the royal couple.

So, judging by this trailer, what is needed for the average Frenchman to like the film? Firstly, so that he can switch off from his difficult reality in the cinema. Secondly, so that he can laugh, and the humor does not necessarily have to be (rather the opposite - it does NOT have to be) highly intellectual. (Here we can remember that laughter is a physiological phenomenon). Finally, thirdly, so that the average Frenchman can recognize his equally ordinary compatriots on the movie screen, and himself in circumstances that they "will not have in real life".

All this is so unlike, for example, the program of the Cannes Film Festival that it is not surprising that the films that win there, even if they are French-made, regularly fail at the French box office.
