First tankers pass through the Strait of Hormuz

Both tankers were following a route approved by Tehran for safe passage. The Mraikh loaded a cargo of LNG in Qatar earlier this month, while the Ye Chi listed its origin as Chinese – a common way for ships to highlight ties with countries friendly to Iran, according to Bloomberg.

Overall, traffic through the strait remained light, with mostly small cargo ships transiting on Thursday. This occurred just hours after US President Donald Trump announced the signing of an agreement with Iran that would promptly reopen the key waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed for nearly four months, limiting access to oil and gas from the Persian Gulf. Some of the shipments were carried out by vessels that turned off their transponders or had permission from Tehran.
