EU prepares major investment package for Greenland

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Greenland on Sunday for a two-day visit aimed at demonstrating support for the governments of Greenland and Denmark, both of which firmly rejected Trump's campaign to annex the world's largest island, Reuters reports.

Von der Leyen will unveil plans for investment in sectors such as critical minerals, satellite communications, and renewable energy in Greenland.

Speaking in the capital, Nuuk, on Sunday, von der Leyen noted that the package of measures would be substantial. Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated that his country seeks to develop "close, friendly ties and a strong partnership" with the EU.

Von der Leyen's visit highlights the growing geopolitical importance of the Arctic for major powers such as the US, Russia, China, and Europe, as melting ice opens up new maritime routes and makes the region's mineral wealth more accessible.
